COM Research Seminar: Engagement of Users in Online Health Communities - A Social Support Perspective by Dr WANG Xi, The University of Iowa. Date & Time: 18 September 2017, 16:00 - 17:30. Venue: Multimedia Laboratory (M5055), 5/F, Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre. Language: English. Abstract: Online Health Communities (OHCs) have become an important source of sharing and receiving information and support for people with health-related concerns. High levels of user engagement are beneficial to both users and the OHC, so it is important to understand what motivate users’ participation, encourage them to contribute and influence their churning behaviors. This work is based on descriptive and predictive analytics of OHC users’ online interactions with text mining techniques. Explanatory models and predictive models have been built to understand how users’ motivations and roles evolve over time and to forecast whether and when a user will churn. About the speaker: Xi Wang has received her Ph.D. from Informatics at University of Iowa in May 2017. Her research interests include social network analysis, social media mining, social computing, business analytics and online health communities. Her past work about recommending users of interests in bipartite and reciprocal social networks has been covered by Forbes, BBC, Agence France-Presse, among others. Now she is focusing on analyzing social influence, social support, engagement and health outcomes in online health communities. Part of the research is sponsored by NIH grant.
