Abstract: A constant stream of fraudulent news stories has given rise to troubling cultural trends and political movements in recent years across Asia. False claims, misleading factoids, propaganda, hoaxes, rumors, questionable advertising, and other types of misinformation and disinformation are now being masqueraded and distributed as news. In this seminar, Dr. Kajimoto discusses emerging modes of ex post fact-checking in the region through a series of case studies in order to make sense of the complexity of information disorder and its intertwined ecology composed of human behavior, computer algorithms, business tactics, and strategic communication in Hong Kong and elsewhere. About the speaker: Dr. Masato Kajimoto served as the leading researcher and a co-editor for the paper "Information Disorder in Asia and the Pacific: Overview of Misinformation Ecosystem in Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam” in 2018. His recent publication includes an entry on News Literacy in the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Communication. He is currently working on a UNESCO study to look into media and information literacy education policies in the region.
