Written as communism waned in the late 1980s, his most recent novel The Bickford Fuse is a satirical epic of the Soviet soul, exploring why Russia seemed so lost in the cyclical maze of its own turbulent history. Kurkov has also written documentaries, movie scripts, and children books. Kurkov’s work has been translated into 37 languages and published in 65 countries. He is a regular commentator of literature and politics in the international media including English, German, and French-language outlets. He is Vice President of Ukrainian PEN and a member of the European Film Academy. He was also the first visiting writer of PEN Hong Kong. In this talk, Kurkov will reflect upon the characters and motivations in his novels and will discuss why politics, humour, and satire seem to be the enduring themes in his writing. All are welcome!
