Language: English. Abstract: Storytelling has long prevailed as a communication strategy and persuasive device. Yet its potential as a rigorous methodology for integrating diverse and marginalised voices into knowledge co-production remains under-explored. This talk reclaims storytelling not as technique, but as methodology: a systematic and reflexive approach to generating dynamic accounts of lived experience grounded in constructivist epistemology, participatory praxis, and intersectional analyses of power. Drawing on a critical review of multidisciplinary scholarship that has actively employed storytelling, this study articulates a four-stage methodological framework—design, conduct, sensemaking, and curation—each embedded with ethical consideration and relational accountability. Using an empirical case to demonstrate its application, the study reveals both the transformative potential and the structural tensions of storytelling as methods. By repositioning storytelling as an epistemic intervention rather than a representational tool, this work advocates a shift from extractive research toward co-creative, emancipatory knowledge co-production, and ultimately, advancing the broader pursuit of epistemic justice. About the speaker: Jenny Zhengye Hou (PhD, University of Queensland) is Associate Professor of Strategic Communication at Queensland University of Technology, Australia. Anchored in an interdisciplinary and socially engaged approach, Dr Hou advances communication scholarship and practice oriented toward public interest and social impact across diverse contexts, ranging from health promotion, disaster risk reduction, food sustainability, to accessible transport. Her work has attracted competitive funding from leading national and international bodies including the European Commission, Gilead Science (USA), and multiple Australian and Queensland Government funding schemes (e.g., CRC, QRRRF).
