Abstract Drawing on the latest scholarly research, this talk explores how artificial intelligence is reshaping crisis communication, mental health support, and strategic public relations communication. Using the context of mass shootings in the United States, the presentation examines the emerging role of chatbots in post-crisis response, psychological support, and community recovery. The talk also discusses AI-triggered crises, ethical challenges, and the future of public relations in an increasingly AI-driven world. About the speaker: Yang Cheng (Alice Cheng), Ph.D., MBA, is a tenured Full Professor in the Department of Communication at North Carolina State University, a University Faculty Scholar, Director of the AI for Communication Hub, Senior Scholar of the Page Society, Legacy Scholar of the Arthur Page Center, and Adjunct Professor in the Poole College of Management. Dr. Cheng is an internationally recognized scholar in communication and artificial intelligence. She has been listed among Stanford University’s “World’s Top 2% Most-Cited Scientists” and, in recent years, has consistently ranked among the top 1% worldwide in the field of Communication and Media Studies. She has also been recognized by Public Relations Review as one of the top five contributors to crisis communication research, reflecting her sustained and far-reaching scholarly impact over the past two decades. Her research focuses on artificial intelligence, crisis communication, corporate social responsibility, and global public relations. She has published more than 85 peer-reviewed articles in leading international journals, including New Media &amp; Society, Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management, and Computers in Human Behavior. Her research has been supported by major grants, including those from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), with total research funding exceeding US$2 million. Dr. Cheng currently serves as Associate Editor of the SSCI-indexed Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management.
