COM Research Seminar: CityUHK Distinguished Visiting Professor Lecture: Rigorous and Repeatedly Replicated Communication Science to Challenge Conventional Wisdom by Professor Jeff Niederdeppe, Cornell University. Abstract This talk will make a case for the value of repeated conceptual replications in communication science to advance knowledge claims and challenge conventional wisdom about the impact of messaging about controversial topics. I will use messaging about diversity, equity and inclusion in the United States as a case study on the value of rigorous and rapidly responsive messaging studies to dispel conventional wisdom about apparent racial and partisan divides surrounding politicized issues. Reporting on five randomized message testing experiments spanning six topics and collecting data from over 40,000 respondents, I will show that messaging about racial inequality in the US is not inherently divisive if theory and evidence-based messaging strategies are used strategically. I will discuss the implications of these findings for communication science and social science research more generally. About the speaker: Professor Jeff Niederdeppe, an ICA Fellow, is the Senior Associate Dean of Faculty Development at the Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy and Liberty Hyde Bailey Professor of Communica􀆟on at Cornell University. He leads Cornell's Health Communica􀆟on Research Ini􀆟a􀆟ve (HCRI) and co-directs both the Collabora􀆟ve on Media and Messaging for Health and Social Policy (COMM-HSP) and the Cornell Center for Health Equity (CCHEq). Ranked as a Top 1% Scien􀆟st in Public Health by Stanford University, he has published significant numbers of peer-reviewed ar􀆟cles across various disciplines. He is the recipient of many academic awards, including being elected an ICA Fellow in 2022, receiving the Research and Extension Award from Cornell’s CALS in 2019, the Early Career Award from the American Public Health Associa􀆟on in 2016, and the Lewis Donohew Outstanding Scholar in Health Communica􀆟on Award in 2014.
