Relocation of Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works (STSTW) to Caverns

Aligning with the policy of developing rock caverns as a means to increase land supply, the Drainage Services Department (DSD) is implementing the "Relocation of Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works (STSTW) to Caverns" project. The project involves the construction of a cavern complex of about 14 hectares in area in Nui Po Shan, Sha Tin for housing a sewage treatment works, enabling vacating a 28-hectare site occupied by the existing STSTW for other beneficial uses. This colloquium will mainly cover the background of the project, adoption of compact sewage treatment technologies in the project and innovative technologies applied in the construction works. The speaker will also briefly introduce the department-wide effort of the DSD in increasing the use of renewable energy and innovative solutions.

Ir Tony LEUNG Ka-chung is currently the Chief Engineer of Cavern Projects Division of the Drainage Services Department. He graduated with a Bachelor degree in Civil and Structural Engineering and a Master of Science degree, both from the University of Hong Kong. He also has a Master degree in Railway Integrated System Engineering from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. Having worked on various public works departments including Drainage Services Department, Highways Department and Water Supplies Department, he has about 26 years of experience in a variety of infrastructure projects, including stormwater drainage tunnels, sewage treatment works to various local and cross-boundary railway projects. He has been working on the relocation of Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works to caverns project since 2020.
