A Mindful Woodworking Experience: 2-day Upcycling Wooden Benches Workshop Program
This beginner-friendly workshop will guide you through traditional woodworking techniques, focusing on the use of hand tools and working with natural wood forms. This hands-on experience not only highlights the beauty of sustainable craftsmanship but also fosters a deeper connection to local resources and heritage. You will learn to craft and create a series of wooden benches artwork by utilizing the traditional woodworking skills and the local wood collected in Y·PARK, and to apply the recyclable products in your creations and daily life.
The workshop is organized by Y·PARK; co-presented by School of Creative Media in City University of Hong Kong; co-presented and instructed by Alvdalen.

About the Woodworking Methodology
The woodworking method of the workshop is to use local fresh wood that still has moisture content, and simply uses hand tools (such as axes, various knives) and wooden instruments, which are made with hand tools (such as shaving horse, pole lathe), to create a series of wooden benches artwork. The teaching and creative concepts are deeply inspired by the Slöjd teaching method from Finland and the technology of Green Woodworking.
Target
For CityUHK students and SCM alumni interested in developing practical woodworking skills, creating traditional and heritage crafts, and yard waste upcycling. This workshop aims to encourage crafty-ness, creativity and self-reliance in everybody, and to make basic woodcraft skills available to the mass. No prior experience with woodworking is required.

- You will need to attend both days (March 1 & 2) of the workshop.
- Be ON TIME.
- Be creative, mindful and concentrated.
About the Instructor
Two wood carving artists from Alvdalen, Vivian Law and Justin Chan, promote a living-with-less lifestyle and stay harmonious with nature in Hong Kong. They acquired their carving skills in different places, such as the UK, Taiwan and Dongyang, Zhejiang Province, which exposed them to both modern and traditional carving. Now based in Kwun Tong studio, they focus on art creation, community workshops, and product design, integrating wood carving into this prosperous city.
About Y·PARK
Y·PARK is located in Tuen Mun. Its aim is to promote recycling of yard waste into useful materials, reducing disposal at landfills and relevant carbon emission, realising “zero landfill” and facilitating carbon neutrality in the long run. Y·PARK is equipped with various installations, which can transform suitable yard waste into various useful materials such as wood boards, wood beams, wood chips and sawdust etc.
