WHY ARE WE SO ADDICTED TO CYBER WORLDS?
FROM TAMAGOTCHI TO METAVERS
Abstract :

New types of behavioural addiction problems related to our reliance on widespread digital technology usage are regarded as mental health disorders. Scientists across multiple fields are debating how we should classify and treat compulsive behavioural phenomena related to social networks, online shopping, and smart phone addiction. But while calls for research into behavioural addictions, especially those facilitated by digital platforms, have been published in the highly respect Nature magazine, businesses are using behavioural addiction mechanisms to attract customers, engage consumers, improve loyalty and boost profits. The global market for video gaming alone could grow from $229.16 billion in 2021 to $545.98 billion in 2028. With an increasing number of the world’s 3 billion gamers experiencing related problems, research into this kind of cyber behavioural addiction and the underlying processes and mechanisms is urgently needed. This talk will review recent research into cyber behavioural addiction and highlight specific challenges and opportunities for future breakthroughs.
